This blog is to share recipes we have found work for us as we follow a Gluten Free regime. Most pictures will be taken by my "sous chef" son as we use cooking as a means of integrating educational and OT activities into daily life. Please remember to check all your ingredients for suitability if you have food allergies/intolerances... we are detailing things that work for us.

Allergy and Free From Show
Earlier in 2012, on a sunny May Sunday morning, we headed off down the M1 to London. Our destination was the Allergy & Free From show at Olympia. With Sous Chef J's limited stamina, we carry out such visits like a military operation. Prior to arrival, we'd noted which companies/stands were a MUST visit and these were targeted first. We had with us our trusty going-to-a-show shopping trolley (with integral fold down seat for Sous Chef J) and, within half an hour, it was full to the brim with all manner of gluten free loveliness. The pics above show our 'haul' from the visit. We also particularly enjoyed the takeaway food on offer in the venue - the gluten free hot sausage breakfast roll was a total treat and we still reminisce about it now!
There's going to be another Allergy & Free From Show in Liverpool this month (October 2012) and, if you have special dietary needs, it's a great place to find new suppliers and inspiration. You can get FREE tickets for the event by clicking here and answering a few questions.
We also bought these lovely Gluten Free cupcakes by Sweetcheeks from the London show and had them with our afternoon cuppa when we were back home. Not sure if they'll be at the Liverpool show but there's sure to be loads of choice and much to 'taste test'. Enjoy!

I'd love to know more about the whole gluten free thing. How did you find out you needed to be for starters? Would a paleo diet be a way forward? Am very curious.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment.
DeleteIt's a l-o-n-g story as to how we came to the Gluten Free decision - basically, after many docs appointments, we were eventually told Sous Chef J had a leaky gut and was, thus, not absorbing nutrients efficiently. So, it was advised that we try to reduce stress on his gut by eliminating gluten and lactose. This would, hopefully, allow repair. All a long time ago and more medical diagnoses since lead us to believe this was a timely decision for him.
Have heard of paleo diet but what we started with was the GAPS diet (a bit like the Specific Carbohydrate Diet) in 2006 (book regarding that is in the book list - Gut & Psychology Syndrome).
Could go on (and on) but won't!

Hi Just hopping around the blogring and saying hello.
ReplyDeleteI am curious about this too, I am very sensitive to breads/pastas etc and often think I should consider going gluten free.

Hi Carol.
DeleteWe pondered the whys and wherefores for many months before taking the plunge. In the end, wasn't that difficult as our meals didn't include much gluten and I've always cooked from scratch as much as possible. Plus Sous Chef J hated all things wheat based...
Our philosophy is 'if it works for you... ' Hope this helps!

Will be reading this with great interest as my mum is (mostly! She is intolerant rather than it causing major health issues, and her tolerance seems to have improved slightly after many strict years) gluten and dairy-free and I would like to make some more interesting things for her.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment. Hope you find some easy-to-cook and tasty new recipes to tempt your Mum with!
